The conversion of biomass into bioenergy (biofuels) and compounds with high added-value is essential in order to sustain our present and future. The term ‘‘biorefinery’’ of 2nd and 3rd generation borrows its origin from the classical petroleum refinery concept and refers to biomass conversion into biofuels and compounds with high added-value through the integration of clean processes. This biorefinery concept emergence with the necessity of identifies the most promising products, considering environmental and economic aspects. Therefore, this philosophy that integrates processes and technologies for biomass conversion demands efficient utilization of all components in terms of sustainability and bioeconomics. The Biorefinery Research Group is active in various aspects of biorefinery processes using lignocellulosic and  aquatic (micro and macro – algae) biomass for the production of biofuels such as bioethanol, production of bioactive compounds and enzymes, design of bioreactors, mathematical modeling and process intensification.

Biorefinery and Engineering lab

The Biorefinery and Engineering laboratory is an integral component of Department of Food Research, School of Chemistry | Autonomous University of Coahuila and this laboratory has been established as a central point in the field of research biorefineries. The strategy of Biorefinery and Engineering lab focuses on the development and consolidation on bioconversion of lignocellulose and marine biomass using environmental friendly processes for the production of biofuels (bioethanol) and high added-value compounds.

Biorefinery and Engineering lab use a variety of methodologies for characterization of raw materials (lignocellulose and marine biomass), quantification of sugars and the compounds of high added-value.

– Characterization of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin

– Determination of sugars by HPLC

– Procedure and strategies for enzymatic hydrolysis and bioethanol fermentation process (simultaneous saccharification and fermentation)

– Production and extraction of high added-value compounds

– Procedure for hydrothermal pretreatment

– Procedure for solid state fermentation process
